Why breast reduction surgery can change the lives of men

Male breast reduction Charlotte NC

Many people associate breast surgery with women, and it’s true that many women have experienced dramatic benefits from breast procedures. However, there are also men who receive a huge benefit from breast surgery. For some, it can change their lives.

These are men who have a medical condition known as gynecomastia. Though the medical term isn’t widely known, it’s actually very common, affecting about half of all men at some point in their lives.

What is gynecomastia?

Gynecomastia is the development of breast tissue in males. There are a variety of causes, including hormone imbalances, use of some substances (such as marijuana or steroids), some medications, genetics, or being overweight. The appearance of breast tissue can be caused by excessive fat tissue on the chest (female breasts are also made up mostly of fat), or may include the development of glandular tissue (milk-producing glands) as well.

Men who have this condition frequently feel shame, and may be targets of social derision (the term “man boobs” may be used to make fun of men with gynecomastia). As a result, most men with gynecomastia make attempts to hide their condition. Sometimes this causes them to miss out on social experiences (such as going to the beach or pool), and they may wear uncomfortable chest binders or restrictive or padded clothing in an attempt to disguise the appearance of the chest.

Fortunately, a man who suffers from gynecomastia doesn’t have to live with this for the rest of his life. It’s possible to treat gynecomastia, which frees the patient from anxiety about his condition.

How can gynecomastia be treated?

In some cases, treating the underlying medical condition will reverse gynecomastia. However, once extra breast tissue has grown, it may not go away on its own. The longer the gynecomastia has been present, the more likely it is to be permanent. Gynecomastia in teen boys is more likely to be reversible, while the condition in adult men is less likely to go away without surgery.

A plastic surgeon can remove the extra breast tissue and restore a more masculine appearance to the chest. This procedure is called male breast reduction. The exact procedure used depends on the extent of the problem.

In most cases, liposuction can be used to remove the fat deposits and glandular tissue. This is a minor surgical procedure, which involves only a small incision. Dr. Miles uses a cannula, which is a flexible tube-like instrument connected to suction, in order to gently remove the excess fat deposits from the body.

For those with more severe gynecomastia, a more extensive surgical procedure might be needed. The incisions will be discreetly placed in the armpit. Dr. Miles will remove excess tissue through these incisions, he can also remove excess skin if needed to achieve a tight, masculine appearance of the chest.
