Choosing Breast Implants in Charlotte That are Right for You

breast-augmentation-chicago-saline-vs-siliconeElecting to undergo breast augmentation is a big decision, brought on by different reasons for many women. Some may elect to feel more comfortable in their clothing while others may be electing to achieve a more symmetrical appearance. Others still may choose to undergo a breast augmentation after an injury or surgery. No matter the decision, Dr. Erik Miles of North Charlotte Plastic & Reconstructive Surgery is here to help you through the decision process for electing breast augmentation.

During your consultation, Dr. Miles will discuss your options for breast augmentation. Patients should have clear expectations for the procedure and be physically and mentally matured so that they fully understand the surgery. Surgeries can be performed with a number of different techniques as well as different types of implants. Because of the overwhelming variety of implants, Dr. Miles will discuss your options for breast implants in Charlotte to help determine what type is best for your desired results.

Saline vs. Silicone

Likely one of the most commonly discussed choices in breast implants would be the decision between saline-filled implants and silicone-filled implants. Saline implants are filled with sterile salt water. Should the implant ever break or leak, the body would naturally absorb the saline, and expel it as waste. Saline implants feel firm overall, while providing a uniform shape to the breast.

Silicone implants are filled with a silicone gel that more naturally imitates the look and feel of a natural breast. If silicone implants rupture, they generally do not leak due to the cohesive texture of the gel. Because they would not cause the breast to collapse, routine exams may be recommended to ensure the breast implant is functioning properly.

While both methods are FDA-approved, only women 22 years and older may elect for silicone implants, while women starting at 18 years old are good candidates for breast augmentation with saline implants.

Smooth vs. Textured

Smooth implants are naturally softer and can move around within the breast pocket. Their ability to move makes them a more natural movement. But their smooth texture can also lead to rippling that may be visible on the skin.

Textured implants, on the other hand, are less likely to move around and shift in the breast pocket. The textured shell promotes scar tissue to adhere to the surface, while reducing a tight scar capsule.

Round vs. Teardrop

The shape of the breast implant will also determine the end result for your breast augmentation. Round implants create a fuller appearance and implants with a high profile can make the breasts achieve more projection. Round implants especially can take on different levels of roundness, but are the most common shape for an implant

Teardrop implants mimic the shape of the breast, but are most commonly used for patients with underlying conditions who wish to have their breasts enhanced. Women with constricted lower pull or tuberous breasts may be ideal candidates for teardrop shaped implants.

No matter what shape, size, or texture you choose, Dr. Erik Miles will help determine which options are best to achieve the most desirable results for your breast augmentation.
